Chapter 18

I stared up at them.

Possibly with my mouth open.

“What’s all this?”

“Whatever Maribor had on them was nothing compared to the genesis of the ancestors, especially seeing it with their own eyes. Do you have anything against apprehending Maribor?”

I blinked. “Uh... no.”

Hunter punched his fist in the air and cried, “Bring the traitor to the queen!”

The sky exploded in an almighty flash of light and the armada shot up into the sky.

“Did you say queen?”

By way of reply, he bowed down too. I grabbed him by the shoulders. “Hunter, stop that crap. What’s going on here?”

“Our plan worked, Dawn, though not in the way anyone expected.”

“Our plan?”

“Maribor’s downfall. And your freedom.”

He held out his hand and I took it, though I was still confused.

“Come on, let’s climb out of here.”

Utterly dumbfounded, I squeezed his hand and allowed him to pull me forward through the molten rock.

Joy was probably the appropriate response at this point, but it eluded me. I was preoccupied with one thought: That was far too easy.
